As we’re nearing the end of 2025, I want to send out a reminder to get out and take in the fall season. If you’re involved in a sport like Mary and I are in disc golf, then this could quite possibly be the best time of the year to enjoy the cool and the beauty of our natural surroundings. Additionally, if you’ve been getting out all summer long, it might be a good time to start thinking about the coming winter and ways in which to stay active during the cold months ahead.
This season of disc golf has actually been a little rough for me. Last year, I was planning to play through the winter, but then I got sick at Thanksgiving time and I was under the weather until Christmas. Needless to say, this really knocked me out of my routine and by the time I was feeling better, I was so unaccustomed to the cold that I found it unbearable to go out. I’m committed to playing as long into the winter as I can bear again this season, but I’ve been thinking about a contingency plan as well.
Getting back into shape was really hard for me once spring came around and I felt like I was struggling with my movement for most of the summer. I’ve even had to deal with a reoccurring injury that has kept me from fully exerting myself. Though I’ve learned a lot about touch and throwing with purpose rather than power this year, I still want to come out of the gate strong next season. The first part of my contingency plan is to keep my flexibility up as if I’m going out to play even when I can’t. This is easy enough to do in my home because it essentially just involves a stretching routine. The second part of my plan involves a new pair of headphones. I am not a gym person, but I’m hoping that a new set of headphones, a music streaming subscription, and the difficulty I had getting back into playing shape this year will be enough to get me into a good routine. Finally, I need to find out if there are any indoor options for disc golf in my area.
What activities do you enjoy for staying active? What sort of contingency plans do you use to stay fit if you can’t do that activity for a while?
Thanks for reading, Matt
