The Bean & Seed

Drinking Beans & Planting Seeds

A blog about food, health, and disc golf!

My home disc golf course, Dauberton Park. Still decorated for Christmas!

Since I started thebeanandseed.com, I’ve been posting about food, healthy body, and healthy mind. While I will still continue writing about all of these topics, I intend to include more regular posts on disc golf. With that in mind, this is now a blog about food, health, and disc golf! Read on to understand why this distinction is so important to me rather than my simply mentioning disc golf here and there.

I’ve shared a lot about my physical and mental health here on the blog. I would be remiss if I didn’t explain why disc golf is so vital to me when talking about my health. Obviously, I actively promote the concept of getting out and doing something you enjoy for the physical exercise. For me, that, far and away, is disc golf. I enjoy being in nature; I enjoy the quiet. But I also enjoy the community and being part of something bigger. I love the feeling of my back being loosened up after a round. I love the challenge and adore the moment to moment thought process that goes into thinking about how a hole should be played. Disc golf is just as much about clearing my mind and setting aside my issues as it is getting physical exercise… Truthfully, it probably does more for my mind than my body.

Disc golf plays much like ball golf. It is scored the same and many of the shot shaping concepts can be thought about in a similar manner. You play with a bag of discs rather than a bag of clubs. The courses are largely free to play and you can get started with one disc for about $10. Even if you’re really into it, you can get a bag and fill it with everything you could possibly need for a couple to a few hundred. You can keep track of your progress using the UDisc app on your phone. If you’re like me, this is awesome because you can set goals and always know that you’re working towards something. Tracking your rounds gives you visual feedback that lets you know that you’re constantly making incremental improvements.

Importantly, as someone in their 40s starting a new sport, disc golf can be played at practically any age; I’ve even been to courses that are part of a retirement community and our Nana has one at her retirement home. This is important to me, because, while I loved playing football and basketball when I was younger, those days are long behind me. I’ve spent more than a decade as a former athlete who did no athletics. I didn’t realize how much I missed it. I didn’t know how badly my mind, in addition to my body, needed to go outside and play. I missed the air, the grass, the seasons… and even playing in the rain. I bring up playing at any age because I don’t want to lose these things that I’ve been missing again. I want to be able to go out and play this sport for as long as I can.

So, what kind of disc golf content can you expect from me? Well, I am only a year and a half into playing, but I am very serious about it. I play 3-4 times a week in the warm months and as much as I can in the cold months. I watch the pros on Disc Golf Network along with a lot of Youtube tutorials. With all of that said, mostly I’ll just be sharing about my experience. Like I have been already, I’ll share about the places I go to play, but will probably include additional details about the locals through more photos and thoughts about standout features of the courses/locations. I will share about some of the equipment I use. I may even document my progress with videos. Keep in mind, this will be in addition to the type of content I’ve already been posting on the blog, so this is just me talking about something I love in addition to the food and health topics I’ve already been discussing. It’s all intended with the goal of eating better, and being healthier both mentally and physically.

Thanks for reading, Matt
